Social Work and Advocacy

As social workers, we must understand the importance of social and political action, as it is imperative to advocate for policies that benefit and improve the well-being of our clients. In fact, the NASW’s Code of Ethics, has specific guidelines, regarding the social worker’s ethical responsibility to broader society and political action (section 6 in the Code of Ethics). When social workers are actively engaged in policy we bring knowledge of person-in-environment, use a strength’s based perspective and many other views unique to social workers that frame and direct policy advocacy in new ways elected officials may not have thought of.
